The Sack Dress

This dress style dates back to the late 1950's .  The Sack dress was a reaction to the dresses at that time, with tight waists and full skirts.  The Sack (or Chemise) had no waist at all.   It was designed by Givenchy and Balenciaga and was then widely copied by at every price point.  The message of the Sack  dress is one of fashion over allure and men of that era were unimpressed by this figure hiding shape.  Wearers of the Sack dress ignored men's opinions as they  would rather be chic then sexy .  Audrey Hepburn and Doris Day sported many variations of the Sack Dress .
